Like many of you, I received a recall notice from BMW today regarding the camshaft chain tensioner. One thing that stood out to me was that BMW states in the letter, "Please note that at the present time we do not yet have parts to conduct this recall; however, we will notify you via First Class mail as soon as parts become available." This confirms something that I needed to know; let me explain. About 2 months ago I started to hear the noises described in this recall notice. I brought it to my local BMW dealer but at that time, no recall was given in the US. After going back and forth with the dealer, they agreed to replace the tensioner. What we didn't know for sure was if the new tensioners that were available were corrected versions from the originals. In other words, were we replacing the tensioner with another bad tensioner or with an updated one. After reading this recall notice, it's clear now that the updated tensioners may still not be available, which means the new one I had installed will eventually fail as well.
